D-8 summit: Members to enhance trade, economic growth

ISLAMABAD: D-8 conference ends with the theme of “Democratic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity” chairmanship awarded to Pakistan for next two years and 15th anniversary of the organization celebrated here on Thursday.
Eight democratic countries agrees with Islamabad declaration, D-8 members will focus on economic, corporation, work for peace, tolerance and democracy. Members will resolve issues with mutual understanding.
Members will boost up trade and economic development.
According to associated press of Pakistan President Zardari said people of Pakistan stand with their brothers and sisters across the D-8 world in pursuit of democracy, peace and prosperity. He put forward several proposals for fostering economic cooperation among member countries. He emphasized the need for Trade and Development Banks; encouraging private sector, facilitating contacts between chambers of commerce and investment houses of the member countries; simplification of visa and customs procedures and barter trade. The President said, “We must grow our economies, and provide our people with jobs and security.” D-8 countries represent a huge untapped reservoir that can serve as a catalyst for peace and prosperity around the world. Pakistan is making unprecedented efforts to normalize relations with India and supports Afghanistan’s own roadmap for peace and reconciliation. He said the leaders of the D-8 democracies are answerable to one billion people of the region and owe them a journey towards a better future.
Commenting about Turkish leadership, on economic issues in particular, has been exceptional and thanked Turkey for its support and commitment. Commenting on Pak-Iran relations, he said with Iran Pakistan’s destiny is inter-linked. “We are neighbors and are located in the same region,” he added. “Democracy and the struggle against oppression is something we also share with our brothers and sisters in Egypt,” said the President.
He said, “We were amazed as, last year, Egyptians took to Tahrir Square to build an Egypt of their choice.” He saluted the heroism of the Egyptian youth and assured full support from Pakistan. President Zardari said, “We condemn the recent attacks in Gaza which have led to the loss of innocent lives. We must address these issues rather than blaming others, we need to take charge of our destinies.”He said D-8 Business Forum, meetings of heads of central banks; trade promotion organizations and trade exhibitions are very important initiatives to help in economic growth. The President said, “We also need to encourage interactions between our parliaments, scholars, students, judges, artists, media and civil society organizations and for this purpose there is need to simplify visa and customs procedures.”
On the occasion Iranian President Mehmood Ahmadi Nejat in his speech called To take step for the better future for upcoming generation. At “All members’ countries can and must play prominent role in defining, Building that future will orders” “Happiness, dignity & Humanitarian must be enjoyed by all”
In his address Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono congratulated President Zardari on assuming the chairmanship of the D-8. “The global economic growth enters continuing to slow down its more challenging for all counties, Members can play a vital role in responding to those challenges by taking measures at national, regional & global levels.”
Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan said “The future of D-8 is very bright, emphasizing the need of collective efforts for the development & prosperity of the member states.”
The Turkish prime minister Rajab Tayyab said the emerging economies of D-8 should work together to achieve the common goal of prosperity & development. “D-8 will be a platform where emerging economies can make together the future; it can become a platform whose voice can hear lauder when it comes to disputes, social welfare and in the evaluation of poverty in the region and eventually on global scale.” He further said that “D-8 can become a much more effective platform for a stronger cooperation and solidarity solely we can become globally effective power.”
“The summit was founded by important Islamic contraries with the proposal of Turkey. Pakistan gives practical shape to the organization with aim to improve trade & economic relation with neighbors and make a regional block by supporting each others,” said Former Foreign secretary Najmuddin Sheikh. He further said that D-8 countries can take good advantage from each other’s & they have the potentials to improve business. In the upcoming years they can increase business with each others up to $ 500 billion, but it required lots of effort.
We already import palm oil from Malaysia we can take more advantage by planting palm oil in different parts of Pakistan, turkey and Pakistan can help each other in textile industry Najmuddin add.
Expert says that 15th D-8 Islamabad summit has significance important but much more to do in future.
